“Because food is pivotal to many cultural celebrations, Weber first defines a type of celebration and then tells a story about it that emphasizes the importance of the ethnic food involved...Six recipes at the end of the book encourages children to cook and try new foods with adult guidance.”

“Stories of the States” uses historical fiction to address some of the major issues in the development of the United States. (One) exceptional book from this outstanding series is “Forbidden Friendship”, a story about the relationship between the daughter of a factory owner and one of the early Chinese immigrants brought in to break the factory strike in l870.”

"... historically accurate and faithful, upbeat, with enough tension, even if you know the result, so that (readers) will stay on edge, wondering if the refugees will be sent back to Europe. What impressed me especially were the lessons the book will teach children about patriotism, a love for America, a love for school, and the loving relationship between Lillian and her mother and between Lillian and her friends."

-Ruth Gruber, author of Haven:The Dramatic Story of 1,000 World War II Refugees and How They Came to America

*This great review is for "Seeking Safety". It is also featured on the back of the book. Thank you Ms. Gruber for this fabulous review :)!
